Santorini For The Day

During our Mediterranean cruise, we had a whole day on the island of Santorini.  This day is one which stands out in my memory as one of those extra special family events.   After disembarking from the ship, we caught a bus to Perivolos, a beautiful black sand beach.  After sunning ourselves for a while, we swam in the cool and clear waters of the Aegaen Sea.

Our swim was followed by lunch opposite the beach.

We then made our way back across the island to the very white town of Oia where we enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around the shops.

Note the towel as protection - it was HOT

It was then time to catch the cable car back down the hill and to our ship waiting in the blue waters below.  It was then we discovered that the queue for the cable car was about a mile long!  Clearly the sun had got to us as we all happily opted to skip the cable car and walk down the hill.  What we of course did not realize is that the donkeys, of which there were many, also used these stairs to make their way up and down the hill and that donkeys have no sense of personal space  :)  Hundreds of very wide, uneven stairs and many close encounters with donkeys later, we made it to the bottom.  This day (including the stairs) is one of my favourite memories from our 2014 Europe trip!

Donkeys Donkeys Everywhere

It's a long way down...

Almost there..

Finally back on the ship. The town of Oia on top of the hill and here we can clearly see the winding steps we successfully navigated.

Heading off to our next adventure...
